A lot of people join the modelling industry thinking they can get by with a few good selfies and that night club toilet shot we keep banging on about, We see it Every. single. day. and not just once! We've already discussed in previous issues how important a PORTFOLIO is and i'm sure you don't need us to tell you that your portfolio is just like your CV. Keep improving and keep updating, It's what will bring you in the work!
Alongside portfolios we are seeing more and more clients requesting models with a good social media following.. To some of us Social media is life, we live on snapchat, instagram and flick through facebook every five minutes looking for something new or should i say... Five seconds.
Clients are looking for models with a Social Media following and nearly everyone is on it and it's really important to use this to your advantage as a business or a model as it's free! When we say a social media following we mean over 5,000 people, 10,000 people and more. Not in the hundreds.
Start with Facebook...
Set up a facebook page under "Your Name - Model" and in your bio list if you are with any talent managers // booking managers or agencies as this is respectful and most importantly your agency should be helping you filter out any strange people or things which aren't appropriate for you.
Once you have your page going ONLY post your professional images with FULL credits to the team.
Once you have done this invite your friends to your page by following the tabs on the right hand side of the page, You can also add admins .. If you are a young model and in this industry please add a trusted friend or family member to your page as an admin so they are able to keep an eye on everything you are receiving, although i am sure they do anyway.
Secondly.. Start an instagram page and add your images with full credits, Hashtags on instagram are VITAL for building up a following and support network, If your profile is public more and more people will be able to see your work when you # which you could think of it as a keyword for example we might # the following: #dreamstreetmodels #birminghammodels #modelsbirmingham and DO NOT leave a space in between words, a # works as a hyper-link and people can click on these tags and view similar things. Usually this will reach those directly interested as they must be searching for the # to find your work.
Next.. Start a twitter! We aren't too good with Twitter ourselves but you can make contact easy with important people like magazines, newspapers and those clients you are longing to work for! Build up a friendship over time and let them know you are about, (Without bombarding them with messages and scaring them off) respond to their tweets, let them know you're a fan and build a good rapport.
Cover Photos and Photos.. On all these sites you can have cover photos and profile photos remember FIRST IMPRESSIONS are everything. A client might not like the latest celebrity quote you have as your cover photo "I am on fleek" don't respond to DM's is hardly the most attractive profile, and yes we do see it! .. Think like a business, Would you hire yourself? Is that really the way you would like future employers to see you? .. Remain professional online, build a following and the work will come!
Websites... You might want to consider making a website, usually you can link all your social media together. There are lots of good ways to make a website online and you can usually find these through google even if you aren't too good with computers, Some websites have themes you can use and various other templates. You can purchase a Domain through someone like Godaddy.com or 1&1 so you could have www.mynamemodel.co.uk This is good if you are serious about modelling and want to manage yourself like you would a business.
Business Cards .. We ALWAYS tell our models to purchase some business cards.. You can get these from Vista Print, Banana Print or various other printers for under £20.00 When you attend castings, networking events or various places.. Having business cards looks so much more professional and might even land you that job!
Editorial, PR and more... Dream Street Models offer FREE regular editorial work for magazine publication and we do this to help models gain publications and their names out there. If you offered a suitable editorial shoot, take it1 You never know who will pick up that newspaper or magazine and you never know what will come from it! .. If your a beauty queen or have a story to tell, Share it with the magazines, newspapers and keep your appearance flowing publicly. We offer full support with Press releases and contacting various media outlets, Make sure your story is positive! Perhaps about work you have done in the community, your latest fashion show or shoot, Perhaps you've overcome bullying or trauma and want to inspire others to do the same. It's lovely to read about people who have started at the bottom and are on track to achieving their dreams.
Once you have these accounts set up, Get your friends and family to support your pages, When tagging yourself to put you forward for jobs, Tag your page! Work hard on building up a following.. The more followers you have, the better! Especially if they have a genuine interest in you or what you are doing. If you are working with a team on a collaborative basis ask them to like your page after the assignment, If the client allows you too.. You could even take behind the scenes photos, Facebook Live or Instagram Live videos and share with your followers! Make sure you credit all those who are involved as working together really makes a huge difference!
Making Contact! Now you're on track to having your social media started, When contacting clients, photographers, agencies or anyone else in the industry remember they are people too and busy ones at that! You hear these sayings "Everyone has the same 24 hours in the day" or "Nobody is busy it's a matter of priority" .. DONT think like this.. Don't hound your contact 24/7 and facebook call them at midnight, don't send multiple messages or ???? or even hello are you here! if you don't know the person that well and don't have that kind of relationship. It is rude and online etiquette still applies. Contact your contact in business hours 9-5 Monday to friday or if you contact out of hours DO NOT expect an instant reply! Just because something is over a computer, they are still a person too with their own lives and families. If you stay respectful online it really will make a huge difference and bring you more opportunities! If you contact out of hours, An email is the best form of contact and i am sure they will get back to you when they can! I once waited three months for a reply from a client and as soon as they were able to contact me back we got the meeting and we got the job! Be patient and polite.. Good things will follow.
